Correspondence of the governor's office. 1943-1947.

Contains the working papers of the governor of Kansas from January 1943 to January 1947, Andrew Schoeppel administration, including routine office correspondence among the various offices of state government, and subject matter relevant to the social, economic and political situation of the mid 1940s. Prior to World War II the issues affecting the governor of Kansas were limited to a small number, usually originating from within this state. During and after the Second World War, the range of issues affecting Kansas and its governor expanded widely, and the volume of documentation also increased. The predominant issue influencing Schoeppel's administration was the war itself. Otherwise, Schoeppel dealt with such issues as housing for returning veterans, labor, prohibition and capital punishment.

Andrew F. Schoeppel was born on his parents' farm in Ness County, Kansas, in1894, where he attended grammar school & high school. In 1916 he enrolled at the University of Kansas. A year later he left K.U. and enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Force. Upon his return from the war, Schoeppel enrolled at the University of Nebraska law school, earning an LL. B. in 1922.
